Government Tourism Organisations

The The Ministry of Economic Development’s Tourism Strategy Group provides tourism policy advice to the government. It works with other government departments on key tourism policy issues and provides tourism research and statistics.

MED's work also includes advising on and evaluating government investments in tourism, assisting with major events and turning the New Zealand Cycle Trail project into a reality..

Tourism New Zealand is the government agency responsible for marketing New Zealand to the world as a visitor destination. The major tool it uses to do this is the 100% Pure New Zealand marketing campaign. Through this campaign it takes New Zealand's story to consumers, the travel trade and the global media. It works with the industry in New Zealand to help them deliver on the promises made in the campaign.

Tourism New Zealand is a Crown Entity funded by the government. It is led by a Board of Directors. Tourism NZ received $84 million in government funding in 2011/12.
